Infection Prevention

  • Wash hands (or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer) before and after personal hygiene, meal preparation, sneezes or coughs, and medical procedure

  • Use disposable gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection when handling blood and bodily fluids which might splash

  • Machine wash a sick person’s clothes and linens in hot soapy water and, if appropriate, add a cup of household bleach

  • Place soiled, disposable medical supplies such as gloves, pads, diapers, Foley catheters, and dressings in a plastic bag, fastened securely, and then in a plastic trash bag.

  • Place needles, syringes, and lancets in a hard plastic container, such as a laundry detergent bottle. Secure lid before placing in trash.

    • National Home Health Services infusion patients will be provided with a special container for disposal of these items

  • Place items contaminated with blood or bodily substances in a leak proof plastic bag, tied securely, and discard in household garbage.

  • Flush waste including stool, urine, blood and any other excretions and secretions down toilet.

  • Use chlorine bleach (1/4 cup per gallon of water or a 1:10 solution) to clean surfaces that are contaminated with blood, feces, and other bodily fluids.

  • Wash dishes in hot soapy water.

  • Cover your cough and nose with tissue when you cough or sneeze, or direct your cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve.  Be sure to toss your used tissue in the wastebasket.
